We love going through the design process with our clients, from materials and color palette to the final finishing touches. The best part is finding the details that make a house feel like your home—a unique expression of who you are. Below are some of our design favorites.
1. One of our favorite Wind River original features is the Lily Pad Ladder. In tiny homes, space is at a premium, so choosing a ladder over stairs is a good option for those who want to maximize open living space. Another great thing about the Lily Pad Ladder, aside from it being a unique accent, is that it functions somewhere in between a ladder and stairs—reminiscent of a spiral staircase.
2. The round windows we’ve done in previous builds have always been a fan favorite. They’re one of our favorite features too, and they look great from both the inside and out!
3. Color stained wood is a great way to add an unexpected accent. You can choose a lighter or neutral color for a subtle accent, or pick a brighter color for a bold look. Whether used for cabinets, an accent wall, or built-in furniture, it’s a feature that’s sure to stand out.
4. Like space, storage is also a premium in a tiny house. Storage stairs are one of the best ways to add a significant amount of storage in your home. Whether you choose them for ease of access to your loft or the additional storage, it’s a dual benefit that’s hard to beat. Depending on what you’re wanting to store, the storage stairs can be open or closed.
5. Mini wood burning stoves are another fan favorite—and with good reason. Not only do they offer an auxiliary heat source, they instantly make any space feel cozier. Wall-mounted propane heaters are also a great option.6. Tile is one of the easiest ways to add a unique accent and pop of color. These awesome concrete tiles are from Zia Tile, one of our favorites.

7. Want to transform your shower into a spa-worthy retreat? Add a shower deck for an instant upgrade.
8. One of our favorite features for both aesthetic and function are passive walls, which are a great way to add separation between spaces while still allowing airflow. These can be open shelving, like shown here, or wood slats (in various patterns) made with tighter or wider gaps for more or less privacy.
9. Give your ceiling some love with a unique stain pattern or paint color, or add a unique patinaed steel accent to one of your walls. Accents can turn a house into a work of art and tell a story about who you are. Find a blank canvas in your home, however big or small, and make it into something more.
10. Lighting is important in any space, but especially a tiny home—from ample natural lighting, to optimal light placement, to types of lighting. One of our favorites is valance lighting, which is not only functional, but can create a noteworthy accent on its own. We like to use valance lighting along stairs to create a soft down light for visibility in the dark.
